# Ability PKI Maintenance Schedule

The Ability Platform can only authenticate devices that hold a valid X.509 CA certificate issued by the Ability PKI. Hence it is extremely critical to understand the Device enrollment (the process of requesting device certificates), X.509 certificate renewal, and revocation for successful operation.

ABB has partnered with DigiCert, a world’s leading provider of scalable TLS/SSL, IoT, and PKI solutions for identity and encryption. Ability PKI is the public signing authority. We are inherently dependent on Ability PKI's infrastructure and systems availability to continuously serve device requests like enrollment, renewal, revocation, and validation. Although Ability PKI services offer high availability and scalability, it is important to understand and document the Ability PKI maintenance schedule which might affect our pre-production, manufacturing, and other operational processes.

List of operations that might fail during the scheduled window

  • Certificate enrollment/renewal
  • Digicert API calls
  • Certificate validation
  • Websites (for example, DigiCert.com)

For example, a device might try to verify the validity of the certificate it is holding by checking the Certificate Revocation List (CRL). Since the Ability PKI services might be down during the scheduled window, the client might throw an error. It is advised to implement a retry logic to repeat the verification process after some time before raising this error to the backend application. However, device authentication with Azure Device Provisioning service and sending telemetry to Ability Platform would not be impacted.

Optionally, users can observe live operational status here. They can also subscribe to the alerts to get notified whenever Ability PKI creates, updates, or resolves an incident.

If you need more information regarding these maintenance windows, contact your respective Client Success Team representative.
